If you just curl it up on the curling iron you will get old lady looking hair. You will have to do a spiral motion (pulling it straight down, still clamped)... I would suggest after you wash your hair put a bit of gel in it and with your hands, from the bottom of your hair (put your hair into your palms in an upward motion) just crunch your hair in your hands. Do this every few minutes until it dries and it will be wavy like you want it to. To make it stay longer you could try a bit of hairspray to hold the waves in (too much will make it look greasy and wet)... its alot easier than a curling iron!
