I have really thick, dull, dark hair that goes a little past my shoulders. When I wake up, it does this weird wavy thing so that it's big around the ears and then narrows down again by my neck. If I straighten it, it looks okay, but boring. How can I add interest while keeping it pretty?

Wet your hair. Put in a conditioner. Something to keep from frizzing. Use your fingers like a comb and go threw it. Let it dry more on the wild stringy side. Put on some hair spray and it should stay for a while.

Herbal Essences now carries a collection of new shampoos and they have one called Dangerously Straight. It helps your hair straighten out but stay sleek at the same time and not frizzy or dry looking. You can also think about using the Body envy by Herbal Essences which is what I use. It keeps my hair silky and gives it alot of volume so when I do straighten my hair it is not boring and flat. They carrry more than just shampoo and conditioner, there are also sprays and mousse.

First off I will tell you to go to a hair stylist and get your hair shaped, as the stylist does this make sure and tell them about your problem, they should be able to help. Make sure the stylist is good, I check to see how long they have been in business, If they suck then they probably would have been out of business long ago.
From personal experience I would tell you to use A good shampoo, about $15 to $20 a bottle U.S. dollars should do it, I like REDKEN. Don't forget to use a conditioner as well, Any old conditioner will do, put a penny size amount in your hands and work it in the sides of your hair but not into your scalp. Last comb through your hair with a wide tooth comb and you should get some decent results! Hope this has been of some help. A good conditioner line I feel is Sexyhair but it cost some cash, cheap conditioners will do as well but wont smell as good or feel as nice.
